Caring For Dry Skin
Caring For Dry Skin
How to prevent baths and showers from making dry skin worse.
- Close the bathroom door and limit your time in the shower or bath to 5 or 10 minutes.
- Use warm rather than hot water. Hot water will dry your skin.
- Wash with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Using a natural or handmade soap is best for dry shin.
- Apply enough cleanser to remove dirt and oil, but avoid using so much that you see a thick lather.
- Pat your skin gently dry with a towel.
- Put on a moisturizer immediately after drying your skin. Moisturizers work by trapping existing moisture in your skin. To trap much needed moisture, you need to apply a moisturizer as soon as you dry off.
- Store brought lotions can be irritating to the skin. Using a natural cream, salve, or balm that contains oils such as olive oil, jojoba oil, and/or Shea butter also works well on dry skin. Some skin care products are too harsh for dry/sensitive skin. When your skin is dry, stop using deodorant soaps and skin care products that contain alcohol, fragrance, retinoids, or alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA).
When our skin is dry and raw clothes and laundry detergent can be irritating. Wearing a cotton tee shirt under your clothing and using a hypoallergenic laundry detergent can help.
- Using natural/handmade products will help with dry irritated skin. Natural products should not contain alcohol, artificial fragrances, retinoids or AHA.
